The 11 Key Components

This chapter is about the 11 key components of CAPA. They can be used both as a guide to what needs to be implemented and a way of reviewing the degree of CAPA implementation.

We know that the more components you have in place the better you will find CAPA works for you, your young people and families. We describe them here, and why they are important to the CAPA model. You will find a component rating scale in the appendix of this book (the CAPA-CRS) so that you can see how you are doing.

Implementation

If you are planning to implement from scratch, self-rating will help you see what you may already be doing that fits with CAPA. You can then focus on missing components.

If CAPA is established, you can see which items you can improve. The Implementation section of this book will help you sort out the detail of how to put these components in place. This section is to help you orientate yourself and understand what makes up the CAPA ‘recipe’. They are the basic components - the place to start cooking. As you get more familiar with CAPA you may find you can adapt the recipe and still get the desired outcomes for young people and families, staff, managers and commissioners. In time, CAPA should feel flexible within these components.
